Dallas

Dallas, Texas

 Dec 2022 Trip - Dec 13 - 15, 2022

Dallas has always been a place I wanted to visit, primarily because JFK was assassinated there.  I had read many books about the assassinations and all the conspiracies, but none of them ever made sense.

Why the draw?  When I was 6, and this was in Canada mind you, we were sent home early from school the day Kennedy was assassinated.  I came home to my grandmother watching TV and sobbing, saying they had killed the President.  At 6, I had no clue what that meant, but my Omi sobbing made me cry too and I vividly remember the impact, though not the details.

The trip to Dallas from Atlanta was delayed by several hours.  There were tornadoes (7 I heard) in the area.  Instead of arriving with plenty of time to check into my AirBnB and then traveling to the my first event, an Escape Room, I had to drive to the Escape Room directly.

Escape Rooms are something I'd like to try everywhere, though they are MUCH more difficult as a solo player.  With my partner in crime, Rose, our success rate was something like 95%.  On my own, my success rate is about 3%.

Escape Rooms 1 + 2 in Dallas - Solo Rooms 2 + 3

I picked 2 rooms my first night at Escape Experience in Euless, a few miles west of Dallas.

Royal Heist which I think I completed and Library of Secrets, which though I didn't complete in time, I was allowed to continue for about 3 more minutes to finish it off.  I didn't consider either room a success.

Cidercade

Several people told me I needed to hit up Cidercade, an arcade that specializes in ciders.  I didn't drink any cider but did see a lot of pinball and other machines.  Supposedly, they have 170 total machines, which I can believe - below are pics of rooms 1 and 2 which are huge!

AirBnB

This was the building where my first AirBNB was.  It was very modern, but I wasn't crazy about it.  Stone floors everywhere and there was a smell of dog piss in the hallways.  Inside, the rooms were very spacious and the hallway was very long, so it wasn't really that bad and the piss smell did not pervade into the apartment.

It was right across from the Dallas City Hall.  Also shown below is a view from my window.

Walkabout

The first morning in Dallas was a beautiful one, for all that it was mid-December.  I first went to the Big Bowler Hat, went back to the AirBnB, then walked down to the meeting place for the tour.

The reason for the hat was to sit atop Oulton's Bowler Hat Store, but after the store closed, the hat was put here.   I just found out that I missed the giant umbrella in front of the Lorenzo Hotel, just a few blocks away.  Image below (not my pic.)

On the way to my next venue, I saw the giant eyeball.  What is it about Texas wanting to be bigger than everyone else?

JFK Assassination and Oswald Rooming House Tour

It was a day of conspiracy theories.

I signed up for a 6-hour tour of the JFK Assassination and Oswald's Rooming House.  To the left is a rather poor picture of the former School Book Depository.  Below you'll see pics of the window where Oswald shot from and the sniper's nest where he set up his perch (behind plexiglass.)

We also went to the Rooming House that he went to after the assassination, got his revolver, and went back out into the street and killed Officer J.D. Tippett.  He was caught at the Texas Theater.

So what about Conspiracy Theories?

My tour group had about 5 different conspiracy theories floating around, including one by Orlando, our tour guide (who was excellent by the way).  I heartily recommend this tour.

I heard CIA, the mob, the imposter theory, multiple shooters, and Castro.

Even the lady who owned the rooming house (in her 70's now - she was 11 when Oswald stayed there), could simply not believe that such a nice guy like Mr. Lee could have ever shot Kennedy.  Apparently, Oswald would play football with the kids and help the kids do homework - a real sweetheart.  I didn't bring up the fact that he beat his wife.

So WHY so many theories?  It's because it's hard to imagine that a pretty much nobody could have killed the most important person in the world.  This is excellently explained in Michael Shermer's book, Conspiracy:  Why the Rational Believe the Irrational - link to Amazon and I don't get a dime.  https://a.co/d/76dtYSk

Escape Rooms 3 + 4 in Dallas - Solo Rooms 4 + 5

I learned a valuable lesson this day.  Though Rose and I can polish off 3 to 5 rooms with seemingly no fatigue, doing 2 rooms in one day solo is way too much.

The first room was O'Bannions Safe, quite a good room, and I almost had it, except the dynamite blew up before I could defuse it.  I guess I bombed.

The second room was so hard, I only got through 2 of the 5 rooms, though I did enter the third room.  It was Wong's Chinese and this was a really, really excellent room, but would have needed more than one person, perhaps even 4,.  The game master showed me everything I had missed (lots!)

Bowling

Once again, Texas has to be bigger.  USA Bowl has 58 lanes - I got lane 56.  Even though I took my own shoes, I didn't do too well with a house ball.

However, as a nice bonus, I met 2 girls, Amanda and Courtney, who flirted with me and bowled with me.  They were both drunk and Courtney was pissed off at Amanda for some reason.  Amanda took the pic.

Leaving Dallas, but first...

Scheduling well-timed flights is very important.  For some reason, I figured a 2:25 flight would be a good idea, but since I had to leave the AirBnB at 11, I had a few hours to kill.  I figured I would visit the Museum of Illusions, something I just found on the same day.  It was quite interesting, but I may avoid other such museums in the future.

And my bad luck with flights continued, because the flight was delayed again.  Apparently, a rivet had come loose on the wing (seemingly not attached to anything) and the mechanics had to go get a drill, otherwise the rivet may have fallen off and done damage.  This took about 2 hours.  Not just for the fixing, but per the pilot, the paperwork.
